What Is Motor Rewinding?

Motor rewinding is the process of removing the old, damaged, or burnt windings from a motor's stator or armature and replacing them with new copper wire. This restores the motor's electromagnetic properties and returns it to full operating performance.

Over time, heat, moisture, contamination, and normal wear can degrade the insulation on a motor's windings. Once insulation breaks down, the motor experiences shorts, ground faults, or complete failure. Rewinding addresses the root cause and gives your motor a second life -- often at a fraction of the cost of a brand-new replacement.

At Complete Electric, our technicians carefully record the original winding data before stripping, then wind new coils to match or exceed the original specifications. Every rewound motor is varnished, baked, and thoroughly tested before it leaves our shop.

Motors We Rewind

From fractional horsepower to heavy industrial -- we handle the full range.

AC Motors

Single-phase and three-phase AC motors of all types, including TEFC, ODP, explosion-proof, and specialty enclosures. 1 HP to 500+ HP.

DC Motors

Armature and field rewinding for DC motors used in cranes, conveyors, and precision applications. Shunt, series, and compound wound types.

Industrial & Heavy-Duty

Large-frame motors for oil and gas, mining, water treatment, HVAC, and manufacturing. High-voltage and specialized insulation systems.

Pump Motors

Submersible, centrifugal, and booster pump motors. We rewind the motor and can coordinate mechanical pump repairs as well.

Fan & Blower Motors

HVAC and industrial ventilation motors. Direct-drive and belt-driven configurations for exhaust fans, air handlers, and dust collectors.

Specialty Motors

Crane motors, dual-speed, multi-speed, explosion-proof, high-efficiency, and custom-wound motors. If it has windings, we can rewind it.

How We Rewind Your Motor

Every rewind follows a proven, methodical process to ensure your motor comes back running at peak performance.

  • Incoming inspection and diagnostic testing (insulation resistance, winding resistance, surge test)
  • Record original winding data -- coil pitch, wire gauge, turns per coil, connection pattern
  • Controlled burnout to remove old windings without damaging the core
  • Core testing to verify lamination integrity after stripping
  • Precision winding with new copper wire to match or exceed original specifications
  • VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) varnish treatment for superior insulation
  • Baking cycle to cure insulation for maximum heat and moisture resistance
  • Final testing -- insulation resistance, high-pot, winding balance, and no-load run test

When to Rewind vs. Replace

We will always give you an honest recommendation based on what makes the most sense for your situation.

The 60% Rule

As a general guideline, if the cost of rewinding is less than 60% of a new motor's price, rewinding is typically the better value. You get a like-new motor at a fraction of the cost, often with a faster turnaround than ordering new.

However, every situation is different. Motor age, efficiency class, availability of replacement models, and urgency all factor into the decision. We provide free estimates so you can compare options before committing.

Rewind Makes Sense When

  • Repair cost is under 60% of new motor price
  • Motor is a custom or hard-to-find model
  • Lead times for a new motor are too long
  • Motor is mounted in a difficult-to-access location
  • Existing motor has a proven track record in your application
  • You need to maintain exact replacement specifications

Replacement Makes Sense When

  • Repair cost exceeds 60% of a new motor price
  • Motor has been rewound multiple times before
  • Core damage is severe or laminations are compromised
  • You want to upgrade to a higher-efficiency motor
  • Motor frame or housing is cracked or worn beyond repair
  • A new motor is readily available and fits your timeline

Fast Service, Any Motor Brand

Standard turnaround is 3-7 business days depending on motor size and complexity. Larger or specialty motors may take slightly longer if custom wire or materials are needed.

Rush service is available for situations where downtime is not an option. Same-day and next-day rewinding can be arranged -- call us to discuss your timeline. Rush fees apply.

We rewind motors from every major manufacturer. Whether it is a common off-the-shelf unit or a specialty OEM motor, we have the expertise to get it done right.
